GECCO Biotech is pleased to announce that it has been granted a subsidy from the Northern Netherlands Alliance to research new redox enzymes under the MIT Feasibility study scheme.
The SNN wants to be an inspiring example of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in Europe. As an alliance of the three northern provinces in the Netherlands (Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen), the SNN helps northern businesses contributing to innovation and sustainability, supporting the shift to a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy.
The granted project will be focused on biocatalytic oxyfunctionlizations that have attracted significant attention in recent years for their potential use in synthetic, organic chemistry. Transition metals are currently utilized in the difficult activation of C-H bonds in aliphatic and other compounds, however the outcome of the reactions is not desirable due to the selectivity they display. However, biocatalytic oxyfunctionilizations present many advantages including their high chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity, which are difficult to achieve by using small-molecule chemical catalysts. Moreover, biocatalytic methods have economic and environmental benefits which make them an attractive alternative to current methods, including their biodegradable and non-toxic nature, and their ability to perform their selective reactions under mild conditions.
Due to advances in genetic and protein engineering the production of biocatalysts has become easier, and GECCO is now able to produce and modify enzymes for optimal performance. As a result, the amount of processes able to be carried out at preparative, and industrial scale is continuously growing. We will use support from SNN to strengthen GECCO’s expertise and portfolio in this field.
