Contributing in the transition towards greener consumer products
GECCO Biotech is excited to announce its inclusion in the ground-breaking OXIPRO project.
The project, coordinated by Norce, Norway, focuses on developing and engineering novel enzymes for environmentally-friendly consumer products.
In recent times there has been a drive towards zero carbon emissions, and OXIPRO consortium is looking to unlock the unique potential of enzymes in the move to greener production processes. The four year initiative, funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme, brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers and stakeholders from 15 expert organizations across 11 European countries, who will be working together towards developing novel oxidoreductase enzymes as a greener alternative in the production of consumer products. Oxidoreductases are an underexploited class of enzymes which offer the advantage of being less hazardous, and consume less energy than their chemical counterparts during product development. The OXIPRO collaboration will develop and deploy an efficient oxidoreductase foundry using high performance computing and cutting-edge biotechnology in an interdisciplinary and innovation approach. This will allow a reduction in processing costs during formulation and production, while enhancing product functionalities.
Increasing sustainability is something GECCO is very passionate about, and this project has potential to reduce pollution by transforming waste into valuable products. OXIPRO has chosen to target the sustainability of detergents, textiles, sunscreens and nutraceuticals in their mission to aid in the EU Bioeconomy Strategy. By broadening the application of enzymes into the greener production of consumer products, OXIPRO believes that oxidoreductases are just the beginning, and this integrated interdisciplinary approach can be explored in other enzyme families and industrial sectors.
